Mathews Food & Drink

I’ve been spending more time in Jersey City lately. There’s been a ton of new restaurants opening and it’s been a lot of fun exploring them. Elizabeth and I made our way to Mathews Food & Drink a few days after Christmas. Their location (351 Grove Street) is really simple to get to as well. It’s funny to think that since I live so close to the PATH station in Hoboken, it’s cheaper for me to take a $2.75 train ride to restaurants and bars near/on Grove Street opposed to an Uber to a restaurant or bar uptown Hoboken.

When we first entered Mathews, we were immediately greeted and seated by their friendly staff. It wasn’t crowded when we had first shown up but by the time we were finished there were a decent amount of people waiting for a table.

The only negative comment I have about our experience is their dessert. Everything up until that point was great though! We each started with a salad; Elizabeth had the panzanella salad and I had the mediterranean. I then ordered their lamb entrée which was served with cous cous, eggplant, and tahini and Elizabeth got the salmon (I can’t remember what hers came with – I believe they switch up their menu often as it’s not posted on their website). We then ordered their lava cake dessert to share but when it was brought out it was really stale and difficult to enjoy. Since the waitress inquired about the dessert, we told her how we felt about it and she happily deducted it from our bill (which we really appreciated!), apologized, and thanked us for the honesty.

I’d be more than willing to back here, and I recommend it to anyone looking to explore a new place. And don’t forget to try their fun and trendy 80’s glam cocktail (pictured above)! I mean, how often do you get to sip on edible glitter?
